Find a mutual
A mutual is a non-profit, member-run organisation that looks after Kanecta. You join one, pay your dues to it (or declare hardship), and it employs the people who build and support Kanecta.
Registered mutuals
None yet. This site is a prototype, and no mutuals have been registered. When they are, they'll be listed here, by anyone, anywhere — this is roughly what a listing will look like.
| Mutual | Based in | Members | What they focus on | Registered |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example Mutual (not real) | Anywhere | — | Support for clubs and community groups; hosting | — |
You can join a mutual in any country. Pick the one whose people and priorities you like — the price is the same everywhere.
What every mutual has in common
To be on this list, a mutual's own rules have to say that:
- it's non-profit, and nobody takes profit out of it;
- it's run democratically by its members, one person one vote;
- most of its board are people who work there;
- nobody can ever be refused membership;
- it accepts hardship declarations without question;
- it charges the one price the members voted for;
- it hands everything it adds to Kanecta back to the trust, so it stays in the commons.
What a mutual does
- Employs developers, designers and support people to work on Kanecta.
- Decides what it works on, and ideally pools its work into the shared main version.
- Runs your annual declaration and counts its members' price votes.
- May offer extras like hosting, training or setup help. It doesn't have to.
If you don't like how your mutual is going, you can move to another or start your own. That's how Kanecta is steered: people choosing where to belong.
Start one
Anyone can. Write your rules so they include the criteria above, publish them, and tell the trust. That's notification, not permission: if your published rules meet the criteria, the trust registers you. It can't refuse, delay or add conditions.
The name "mutual" isn't settled — "member organisation" and "co-operative" are both in the running. We'll keep whichever one people actually use.
What if there's no mutual for me?
If there are no mutuals at all, there's nobody to pay, so you don't have to. And if none is reasonably available to you, that's your call to make — you don't need to ask anyone.
